Huntington Beach represents the perfect California lifestyle. With its 8.5 miles of stunning beach and beautiful climate, this “Surf City” is ideal for those who crave relaxation. The city is located in Southern California in Orange County, with Los Angeles being 35 miles north and San Diego 90 miles south. It was named after Henry Huntington, a railroad magnate, who initialized the development of the city.
The city is so beautiful that many well-known singers and songwriters have referenced it in their songs. A couple of well known songs that pull their inspiration from Huntington beach are “Surfin’ Safari” by the Beach Boys and “Surfer Joe” by the Surfaris. Dean Torrench, from the 1960’s band Jan and Dean, said that their song “Surf City” was represented by Huntington Beach because it “embodies the song’s spirit of freedom and California fun.”
Huntington Beach boasts some of the cleanest and safest beaches in California. The endless sunshine mixed with the cool Pacific waters make it perfect for surfers and beachgoers. The dress code around town is very casual, with wetsuits, bikinis and sandals being the norm.
The Orange County Register readers voted Huntington Beach the best place to live in Orange County. It offers a variety of housing to suit all income types and has an outstanding education system. The city ensures that all of its amenities, including boat marinas and several parks, are kept clean and well-kept.
The two main industries in Huntington Beach are Tourism and Technology. Currently, there are over 650 industrial businesses located in the city. Some of the bigger names that have chosen Huntington Beach as home are Boeing, C & D Aerospace, Cambro Manufacturing, and Quicksilver. There are an assortment of jobs available in the city.
Boeing is one of the largest employers in the city and is situated on the former site constructed to serve the Apollo program. Some interesting buildings still remain from then, such as the S-IVB upper stage for the Saturn IB and Saturn V rockets. As well, a couple of telephone polls still have the “Apollo Dedicated Mission Control Line” written on them.
Quicksilver has also chosen to make its world-wide corporate headquarters in Huntington Beach.
The city believes that it’s beaches are the biggest natural resource, and no wonder; Tourism accounts for the majority of income for the city. Without a public vote, construction on any part of the beach is forbidden to allow the city to retain its natural beauty.
The city itself is situated above a natural salt dome. Inside this salt dome was a reservoir of oil, but over the years it has depleted significantly. At the moment, oil production counts for a significant portion of the local income. There are a total of two offshore extraction facilities left, but it will not be long before tourism has to become the primary revenue source for the city.
