Concord is located 29 miles east of San Francisco, California in Contra Costa County. The city itself covers 31.13 square miles and in 2000 had a population of 121,780, making it the largest city in the County. The city rests adjacent to Mt. Diablo.
Roughly 13% of the population in Contra Costa Country is represented by the population in Concord and that will continue to grow as Concord is one of the fastest growing countries in the San Francisco Bay Area. The central location to surrounding communities as well as its copious population makes Concord an idea place for businesses to locate. It offers an educated workforce as well as a large customer base.
Concord is very well located and provides residents with easy access to San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Sacramento, and Napa Valley. The Immediate Bay Area provides a large selection of activities and scenic routes and the warm climate encourages residents to enjoy the scenic attractions throughout Northern California.
The main attraction in downtown Concord is Todos Santos Plaza. This area is famous for its farmers market, the large variety of restaurants, and free summer concerts. In order to take advantage of the public transportation as well as the beautiful area around the park, the city has recently redeveloped the downtown area, adding new apartment and condominium projects. Unfortunately, this has not completely solved the homelessness and crime problems in the downtown area.
In the past, Concord has served as a bedroom community for bigger cities nearby, such as San Francisco and Oakland. However, within the last couple of decades, the job market within the city has increased. Extensive back-office operations, such as those from Chevron and Bank of America, have been established, thus creating a higher variety in the local economy. One of the largest malls in the United States, Sunvalley Mall, is located here, as well as many auto dealerships, Cosco, and Fry’s Electronics. Before being shut down in 2008, the website hosting provider Atrivo also headquartered here.
